Kitchen Geek!

As well as being a geek at the computer, I'm also a total geek in the kitchen.

You know the kind of kitchen gadgets that other people get as wedding presents and use once before leaving them to gather dust? I buy that sort of thing for myself - and I use them.

I've already mentioned my toasted sandwich maker and my chocolate melter, both of which get used about once a week. Other kitchen electronics include two kettles (yes, two), 4-slice toaster, ice cream maker, slow cooker (I think this is what the Americans call a crock pot?), raclette, etc. Funnily enough, although I do have one, I almost never use my food processor.

On the non-electrical side, I have a pasta machine, turntable for icing cakes, marzipan fruit rollers, three fondue sets... you get the idea. Possibly the most critical is the gadget for releasing the pressure of jars so a weakling like me can open them without my husband's help!

My latest kitchen toys are some silicone 'poach pods' that I bought on eBay:

They're designed for poaching eggs but I think they'd be equally good for small steamed puddings or idli... anything like that.

What's your favourite kitchen gadget?

Oooh, fun. I so need egg poachers. I would love to have even half the gadgets you have...that is if I had a kitchen that wasn't roughly the size of a shoebox. But I know, some day, I will have that big kitchen I've always dreamed of, and when I do....when I do....mmmmm, can't wait.

Oh wow you do like kitchen gadgets dont you? And you use them too? Oh I am not sure. I think my blender gets the most use or maybe my juicer its a toss up. Otherwise I have a whole drawer full of them that never get used....yes I am not the patient sort. If only you lived closer I could give you a whole lot more, lol!

I love to be in the kitchen, everything from canning and baking to whipping up something tasty for my family to nosh on. Kitchen gadgetry is so lovely, and there are so many things I want. Right now my favorite tool is the electric popcorn popper I got as a gift. We love popcorn, but the stuff you get in microwave bags these days just isn't as good as old fashioned, air popped popcorn.

I love the little pods. My hubby loves paoched eggs. hmmmm My favorite gadgets are the round magnetic spice containers that I stick all over the side of my suspended microwave. Very handy indeed.

I don't like the poach pods. I bought some when they first came out, and have only used them once. they're quite good for 60 second chocolate cake though.

Does that sort of look like a frog to you? Or is it just me?

... I sort of want one.

It has to be my microplane grater. So sharp and capable. I wish I'd invented it!

Heather - I used to have a shoebox kitchen, cute but hopeless for storage space ;)

Jenny - I keep meaning to get a popcorn popper, haven't got round to it yet though.

Kazzy - ooh, magnetic spice tubs sound fun!

Kirsty - chocolate cake in 60 seconds is a winner for me... recipe?!

Cheryl - I think it's just you :)

Domestic Executive - never heard of one of those, I have a rotary grater and I love it (except at washing up time, at which point I hate all graters)

4 Tablespoons flour
4 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1 Egg
3 Tablespoons milk
3 Tablespoons oil

mix everything together in mug/bowl/poachpod (well mix in a bowl and then put in a poachpod, because they're a bit bendy to mix in)/whatever you can microwave and is clean.

stick in microwave until it mushrooms out of its container (it's actually about 3 minutes, not 60 seconds. but that's still acceptable cake making time.)

tip out onto plate, serve with custard/cream etc. also, while it's microwaving, you can melt a bit of chocolate and golden syrup to make a sauce.
