Architecture, Art, or Poetry?

Poem

Just home from Sheffield again. This poem is on the side of one of the buildings belonging to the 'other' Sheffield university (Hallam). It catches you as you walk up into town from the train station, and you can get a sense of scale because those are perfectly normal-sized trees.

Is it part of the architecture? A public work of art? A poem which just happens to have a rather unusual medium of publication?

In any case, I hope you'll agree it was worth my stopping to take a photo.

In case anyone isn't aware, Andrew Motion is Britain's Poet Laureate. I don't know whether this poem constituted part of his official duties in that role.

That's a pretty cool way of leaving your mark on society!

Well that's a first! I've seen lots of things on buildings but never a poem. Really cool! Happy weekend!

This is a great statement by the "new" University in Sheffield. I worked at Oxford Brookes for years so can't help be a supporter for this breed of HEIs. Fantastic picture, thanks for taking the time to share.

Wonderful poem. I don't usually care for rhyming poetry, because it feels as though the poet constrained his images into what would rhyme, but this is terrific.

What does the poem say? I think, sometimes ten words can be worth a hundred pictures. Well placed script is powerful. Thanks for making me think. Gordon

Very cool idea. Maybe we should each put a portion of our own favorite blog posts on the sides of our houses. That could be cool!
