Friday Shoot-Out: Sheffield's Winter Garden

The theme for this week's Friday Shoot-Out is gardens. I can bore you with tales from my garden any day of the week, so today I'd like to show you a more special kind of garden.

The first advantage of Sheffield's Winter Garden is that it's actually inside a large glasshouse - so you can enjoy it even in the rain.

The plants all have a slightly tropical feel, but I'm no botanist - do any of our tropic-dwelling Shooters have these flowers locally?

I love to wander in here when I have a little spare time; it's close to the train station, and it's a great way to while away a few minutes that might otherwise be spent waiting on the platform. Little paths meander between the plants, with benches tucked away in quiet corners...

...or stop and get a coffee at the cute little cafe (surprisingly reasonable at £1 for a coffee or tea).

There's even a tiny pond, with a fountain taking the form of a miniature waterfall, which adds to the relaxing atmosphere.

The only thing that could make it more perfect would be some colourful birds hopping between the trees - but I can imagine them! I spent about an hour here yesterday (and it is only a small place, really). Again I apologise for only having a mobile phone camera with me.

Very cool!

My daughter works for the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, OH, so I go there often. It's such a breath of NOT winter!

Oh how I love that orange plant, and I am bad at remembering what they really are! I totally was driving around looking for a garden to visit, but knocking on a residents door was my only choice, lol...I miss botanical gardens, but you can drive near PA and find a few...but, not by myself, as that area is said not to be safe...

Yet another good point about Sheffield (hometown of Michael Palin being another!). I wish we had a local place to view gardens in winter. Great shots.

That's a nice winter garden. And it's so relaxing wandering around that garden. The 4th picture, is the bird of paradise, there's a lot of that in Hawaii where I used to live (at least I know some flowers name hahaha). You have a great shots from your mobile phone :-)

Hello Rachel. I like your blog and reading about all the many things you're interested in. The first flower you showed is I think called a bird of paradise flower, and it grows outdoors in warm temperate or sub tropical places. Ah! botanical gardens!

Oh, hm, just noticed that Missy pointed this out too. Funny, it didn't show before, maybe she's commenting the exact same time as me. (Great minds think alike, Missy...)

I enjoyed all of your photos. Stunning. And the building are just beautiful The orange flower looks like it ready to take off.

But wait! You took those with a cell phone? Now, what kind of cell phones do you have over there?

I carry around a ton of gear all day and I find out I could be using my cell phone!

Tell me. Is it a secret cell phone only available to secret agents?

Patty - my phone is a Nokia 5800, I don't know whether you have the same makes/models over there? But it's nowhere near as good as my proper camera.
