We were driving around Barra, the southernmost inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides archipelago, when we spotted this sign:
How great is that?! It's certainly the only beach-based airstrip in the UK.
We stopped, took a few photos of the sign, and were ready to move on - until my husband spotted that, indeed, the windsock was flying. The airport was 'active'. Hopefully, we scanned the skies for any sight of a plane.
We were about to give up and move on when the afternoon flight arrived:
Talk about lucky. We'd just happened to be driving past at the right time to see the coolest-ever runway in use. Now I really, really want to land there (despite loving the ferries, which are a far more practical way to travel around the Hebrides).
