Before I'm 30

Yeah, it's that time of year again. Happy Birthday to Rachel, etc, etc...

Sparklers!

I've seen lots of interesting "life lists" on other people's blogs, and from time to time I wonder about creating my own, but I'd really struggle to enumerate everything I want to achieve in my life. Not least because I have a short attention span, and it's highly likely to change; my goals have never been static.

However, looking ahead to the next three years feels much more realistic - and leads to a conveniently round number.

This list is designed to be challenging; if everything was easy, it wouldn't be much fun. But I don't think I've included anything that's completely beyond the bounds of possibility, either. (I don't want to hear the word 'impossible' before 2013!)

So, without further ado, this is where I'm hoping to get to by the time I'm 30. Feel free to call me on it.

Awesome! I'm a few years (well, more than a few, but who's counting?) ahead of you and was just thinking last night of goals I'd like to accomplish before 40. Wait, did I say 40? OMG, I'm still only 20 in my head.

Happy birthday! I'm all for erratic use of the manual function (is that me or does that sound strangely naughty out of context!), it produces some pretty interesting results. Although that does include some stinkers. It reminds me why I never really moved over to manual controls with my film SLR as it was so expensive and time consuming to get the results of my experiments back.
Essay over! Best of luck with your goals. :)

I would say your list is quite ambitous. there is only one thing that I see that I don't see as a positive thing - 5000 hits on your blog. stop counting them... just use the blog as your personal sounding board and don't worry if only a few respond. A few can be useful and too many would just be confusing. to end up with so many you are trying to please would lead you away from your first purpose.... (there I go with using purpose again)
otherwise the list seems coherent - some items in different catagories overlap. draw out of the whole list 5 prioities.
(by the way am not unhappy - isn't that something just miss feeling involved with life - too much isolation time.
thanks for your visit to Flowers.

Happy birthday! And wow - what a great list!!

Here's hoping you accomplish everything you set your mind to :)

Ooo I love this idea. I turn 27 in March so I'll probably steal this idea for around then. I really love the whole "Happy Birthday to Rachel, etc, etc..." part, that's exactly how I feel about my upcoming birthday. My younger friends are having fun pointing out just how close 30 is...

Autumn said...

darnit I meant to mention how much I loved the list too... I'm a list girl (though I tend to forget or lose half my lists I'm still very much a list girl!)

Patricia said...

Wow, that's an impressive list! Good luck with all of it. I used to have a list like this, but haven't updated it in a while... maybe it's time to take another look (before I hit 40... eek!).

Happy Birthday!!! Love your list! It's ambitious but so are you :) I've no doubt you'll complete it! Keep an eye out for my next post (tomorrow or Friday)... I think you'll like it... :)

Enumerating the tasks for the coming years is a brilliant way to keep things moving forward. Best of luck in the next three years. (Through presenting at conferences is really not all its cracked up to be...)

Happy birthday!

mine is set to end at 45

how inspiring to see that you are
this together before 30

happy birthday - great list - challenging and interesting and so quirky ideas there - I would love a wood burning stove and to do some knitting again - hope to see an update on the list sometime before you are thirty to see how you are going

These are some good goals. I've also been thinking about what I'd like to accomplish before I'm 30. It still seems a bit daunting, though.

Hi, I'm Maureen, by the way!

Very creative life list! I like how you categorized everything, and have a column for progress. It shows how organized you are. I love organization, but I think if I tried to do what you've done with my Life List, everything would fall under "Travel" and nothing would be under "Home" or "Academic" - and I'm not sure I like how that would reflect on me.

Hi from SITS! These are great goals!

I am very interested in what board game you will come up with! I love games.

Holy cow! Impressive list. And all by the time you're 30!!! My 30s have been the best years of my life, and I'm told 40s are better...I think your 20s are so much of a growth process, where you're building and preparing for your future. It's when you (usually) meet and marry your soul mate and (usually) start having kids. It's when you get your education and start your career. Usually you get your first house and start paying that off. By your 30s you're a little more settled in and it's almost as if that's when you stop preparing and start living. That's my take on it anyway!

Bells said...

oh that is a GREAT (and scary!) list. I wish you all the hardwork and determination you need to pull it off - and you must keep us up to date!

I was astounded to learn from your comment on my earlier post that you are working on a PhD in "Computer Assisted Dialogue"!!

great list! (and we're the same age!)
best of luck to you in all of the pursuits, i hope you accomplish them all, they are not small tasks, but that's why they're worthwhile :)

You should learn to x-stitch instead of embroider. It'd be faster/easier. ;P

I guess that would be cheating though.

Hi. I don't know how you found me, but a good thing for me. I have a son your age, with lists just as complicated.

You don't mind if I follow along your journey for a while, to remind you about the things in life not on your list.
Glad to meet you.

Meri said...

Wow -- that's an ambitious list! And I'm with Rosario/Lakeviewer. Mind if I follow you on your journey? So happy birthday (and 30 isn't scary at all -- I fell in love at 30 and really upset the apple cart).

This is a very interesting life list, especially in terms of how possible and optimistic the entries all are. (I have seen a few lists, and they have all contained at least one impossible/improbable entry.)

I wish you luck with everything that you wish to accomplish; as long as one has a desire to succeed, nothing is impossible. I cannot wait to hear more about your adventures inspired by this list--I am especially keen to see more of how your handicraft and writing progresses. Good luck with getting published!

Hi, stopping by from SITS. I don't understand this whole Favicon thing but saw you posted about having one.

Good luck on your list! I just turned 30 a few months ago and it was wonderful. I love to travel. Recently I went to India for 5 weeks and loved it. I lived in New Zealand for a year to work after college. I saw NZ on your list and hope you go because it is so beautiful and I know you will love it there!!

Hi Rachel!
POM here from SITS! Wow...what a list! So...you're like, what? 22 now? only kidding, but man those are some lofty goals! Great ones though...if you manage to accomplish all of that, you should really give yourself a good pat on the back!
I turned 30 last May. Not a PHD, Not a published author, don't get 5000 hits per month on my blog and don't have a raised vegetable bed...BUT, married the greatest man on Earth and trying for a baby. IF you asked me at 25 if these were my goals...I would've said NO. Just goes to show, life changes, goals change...and it all works out anyway!
Good luck to you! I will have to keep following.

Happy Birthday and Happy New Year, too! Guess it always feels like one and the same, huh?

I like your list. I especially like the board game goal. An unusual creative venture that could be fun and lucrative.

I could stand to do something of this nature for myself, this list of goals. I'm like you - short attention span. It feels like a set up from the get go. But it would be a good way to keep steady and now slide into do-nothing-isms.

Enjoyed your mum's story, by the way. Definately worth the stop-by. Thanks for suggesting it.

You've got a good list here. My list is lifetime goals, but I like the short(er) term stuff because it gives you more drive to do them!

Bibliomama said...

That is a remarkable list. I had my first baby at thirty, so my goals have mostly included showering most days, ingesting some sort of nutritive substance and keeping the kids alive. Now that they're both in school full days it's been sort of fun and sort of terrifying approaching the possibility of my own goals, passions and (gasp) having a marketable skill again.

Kristine said...

I love that you've updated it, and your goals are simply amazing. Wow. Before I'm 30, I just want to master cleaning and cooking for myself. And, Happy SITS DAY!!!

Happy SITS Day!

I only have 1 goal before I turn 30 (since it's 7 months away). Lose 30lbs.

I'd love to remodel kitchen - but that requires money, something I don't have much of currently! I love your list!

LisaDay said...

May I suggest not getting a wood-burning stove. They are messy, dangerous and messy. I was able to convince my husband to finally remove the upstairs one. Only one left, which I would be happy if it moved to shed. Did I tell you they are messy?

Happy SITS day.
