Before I'm 30 (Update 1)

In January, I laid out a list of things I'd like to achieve before I turn 30 - giving myself three years, at the time. Today marks six months on from there, and consequently one-sixth of the way through (in time if not in progress...), so this is a quick update on where I'm up to.

But before I get on to listing and box-ticking, I'd like to say a little bit more about my motivation.

I made this list because goals and deadlines keep me productive; that's just the way my brain works. I chose things to include based on areas where I wanted to push myself, things I wanted to start (or finish) sooner rather than later, and one or two places where I felt I could use a little extra encouragement.

There's no place in this process for quick wins, or cheating, or shortcuts... I only wrote down things that I really, really want to do. And if I want to do something, I want to do properly. That might mean I miss some goals simply because I haven't finished to my satisfaction within three years. That's okay. I expect there to be other lists for other periods of time.

Enough of me rambling, then. Let's see where we're up to, with green for finished items and pink for progress since January.

For what it's worth, in addition to my usual annoying stalking, I hit "refresh" a couple of times to help you along your way to your blog hit-goal.

Well done. Does getting the Guiding warrant mean that you would be leading Girl Guides? Is it very difficult to get the warrant there?

I love this idea, I've seen so many people do this, I'm going to do it too, but I need to have a good think about it.

I would have had a few things on your list if I'd started it earlier but I've done them now, like presenting at conferences and publishing in journals.

I love the 30 countries idea - I'll have to count my list up and see how many more I need - might steal that one from you!

I'm not brave enough to do a podcast! Good luck with that one. Finishing you warrant shouldn't be too difficult I'm sure you're doing it all already anyway.

Good luck and enjoy these!

Love this. I wonder whether it's worth starting my 'before I'm 30' list while I still have 6 and a half years to complete it...!

Ah, the energies and optimism of youth. Send some my way.

Impressive Rachel and you have age on your side even if you do not complete this list before you are thirty. In fact I think you will be adding to it. :)

What a great update!! I am inspired by your follow through! Many folks start lists like this but do not do what is needed to keep the game in front of them!!

Love that you went to Greenland.... that and New Zealand need to be on my list!!!

wow I'm impressed with all you've set out to accomplish. I can't make lists like these because then I'll just get disappointed in my failure, but I do hope to publish a book by 30 too! Good luck!

Love your list. What are you writing your dissertation on?

My goodness! These are great goals. Of course, your PHD will be enough!

Wow! That is pretty impressive, Girl!! You are really crossing these babies off, one by one! Nice job! Just reading it makes me TIRED! (But then again, I'm over 30!)

That's such a great set of goals to have!

Here's to the next six months of progress!

Hi! My 2010 list is updated every couple of days and the goals themselves are amended to reflect reality. For instance, I realised I was never going to get time to work all the way through a certain Chinese grammar book before leaving Taipei, so have reduced that goal to finish chapters 2 and 3 (which are nouns and verbs, so pretty long sections), and I couldn't take an exam I was interested in - I was ineligible this time, so that got knocked off totally!!

I also have a long term list that gets played around with as and when interests wax and wane, or new things come up and knock others off top place!! Sigh!=)

Good to see your progress, keep it up! I'm looking forwward to the next update. Keep on following up enquiries that you send. Most people ignore you the first time you contact them, you really have to get back to them until you at least get a certain 'no thanks'. My trying to get a decent job in Sheffield will be like that, I fear....

Blog hits are a HARD thing to measure! Mine have stayed relatively static at about 1000 per month, but I'm aware that my number of followers and Reader subscribers has increased a fair bit. Many regular readers don't 'show up' on things like Analytics stats as they read only feeds and not the real thing. Frustrating when you want a real readership figure!

See ya soon! Toodles.=)

Thanks for stopping by my blog this week. I love meeting new friends. I am your newest follower. I can't wait to look around a little and check out your blog.

Good luck! And well done. I like your list and the way you measure your progress. Goals are good. Although kids make it hard to have goals other than 'keep kids alive until tonight'. I know it's a lame excuse, and I'm comfortable with that.

I do like your list...you have made nice progress...those are some great goals. Good luck on the queries..it is nerve-wracking and exciting!

Good luck getting your novel published!

I think a list is a good idea, but I'm more of a "one goal at a time" sort of person, because I put my absolute focus and energy into that.

If I had 24 other goals weighing on me, I'd go mad.

You have so many great ambitions. I make a list for everything else, I wonder why I never made one for life? Might have to think about that. Best of luck!

Amazing! I love your ambition!!

Fantastic fun list! I used to make lists like these... and then I realized that the fun of it for me was veering from the list. :) Whatever works!

Good progress and an impressive list. Remember to enjoy the process along the way.

That is quite a list! And you're doing well in achieving all your goals. Just make sure you leave lots of things to aim for in the future too.

It's interesting to see your real priorities; going to Greenland and knitting a sweater!
Wishing you "bon courage"!

Less than 2 months until I turn 30. I thought of making a list and didn't.

Good luck with your novel queries! That's an impressive list.

Good luck with your queries!
