Amsterdam's Architecture

Amsterdam's architectural history is written in the rooftops of its canalside houses. The tall, thin buildings in the city centre are similar in many ways, but the different building styles over the years manifest strongly in the shapes of the gable ends: triangles, rectangles, and bell-shaped curves. Old styles and new(er) are sandwiched together into a complete architectural mishmash.

How interesting, and this is something I never knew! They ARE really tall and thin! My favorite is the last picture, what a beautifully shaped and strangely lovely building! It looks like there's a tiny greenhouse or sun room way up on the top left, partially hidden.

My sister would love this. She's an interior design major.

I really enjoyed my visit to Amsterdam. Was not sure I would
remember it twenty years or so
later, but I do. Clear as crystal
when you put up photos for me!

I'm so unaccustomed to a city, those connected homes always amaze me. Those are fascinating with their different styles.

Did you get to see someone moving furniture into the top floor using the cargo hooks left over from when merchants kept their stock in their houses?

I desperately want a house with a cargo hook!

Architectural mishmash or not, it's lovely. I feel as if I'm taking an online travel course with you.

I tried to leave a comment the other day but it simply didn't work... I love the atmosphere and architecture in Amsterdam. There's something really friendly, laid back and a little bit elegant about it, a great place. Love that last photo - oh to live in a house like that :-) Have a great week, Love from London x
