My First Poster
I've been away at a conference this week, the International Workshop on Computational Semantics. I was presenting a poster and a short paper - my first academic publication.
Writing the paper itself felt quite straightforward - it's not that different to any academic essay - but producing a poster was a very different kind of task! You have to make it visually appealing at the same time as being informative, and you need to strike a balance between enough detail to be interesting but not so much as to be overwhelming. Just designing the poster took me about four days in total... longer than it took to write the paper. But it was worth it, I've met some great people in the field and had some productive conversations.
I've also started a small research section on my website - if you feel like taking a look, I'd love to know what you think. Does it make sense to a non-specialist? Links to this week's paper and poster will be on there shortly.

Exciting! Can't wait to learn more about what you're working on! I love the concept of the poster and its connection to your writing!
Congratulations! This is exciting stuff. Your work is way too complex for me to absorb. I took a look at the survey, tried to answer the questions and got marred in many segments. I tip my hat to you.
This is exciting, and new. So work, but very cool work. How about taking a picture of the poster for us?
I have been to enough conferences and seen enough posters to know that it takes a pretty good talent to be both interesting, informative and not overwhelming. I am sure you did well!
So nice for your adventure, and a poster too

My only experience with posters is with my kids' in grades 4-6. I'm curious about how it's used at a conference. I looked at the search page and I have to say it sounds impressive but I have no idea what it means. :)
Yup, it makes sense, although I don't know how far I qualify as a non-specialist, having done my time in academia etc.=)
Looking forward very much to seeing your poster etc.
The challenge of communication - saying what you want to say in the minimum of words! Posters are a true challenge so well done for getting yours completed.
Rachel, following along...you sound and look like a ton of fun, so count me in!
Congrats on your first poster! That's a neat opportunity. Yes, making a poster with a visual presentation in mind is quite different than just the paper. Good job ;)
I'm interested in language too, but possibly on a different (more kindergarten) level!
I am impressed. You are always accomplishing something.
So far it makes perfect sense.
That is very exciting! I'd love to see the poster =-)
Congrats & I'd love to see the poster!
Well done! I'd like to see the poster, too.
Looking forward to the poster and the paper (although I may not understand either).
Do you speak other languages?
Rachel, congratulations on the publication of your paper! I look forward to seeing your poster!
A poster is do tricky, I often have to present oral papers at conferences but very rarely a poster. It's so much harder to get the information across on a poster and provide enough info but not too much. I'm glad it went well.
I'll have a look at your research section, great idea to do that!

Hi Rachel, the link to your research did not work (for me); led to an error page. Cheers,
