Buying A Blog?

I had a really strange email this week. The subject line was "I want to buy your blog" - and the content was more or less what you'd expect, given that.

I've never seen anything quite like this proposal. They're quite up-front about the fact that they just want it for search engine rankings, but they want to buy entire blogs, including all the content and the domain name.

The message invited me to suggest a price, but honestly? I can't think of a number high enough. I'm hugely attached to this blog, to my readers, to the social side of blogging. I've poured hours of my life into it: I do this because I love it. It could never be worth as much to anyone else as it is to me.

But even without trying to price the emotional connection, the examples of successful sales given in the message are out by orders of magnitude from what any sane person would accept (e.g. $1000 for a blog... when a blogger can easily get over $100 for a single advert).

Has this happened to anyone else....? And just for fun - what would be your magic number??

I've never got an offer and I wouldn't know a price!

I had a similar (the same?) email this week. I just deleted it without much thought. I wouldn't even know where to begin when thinking of a number.

This is a new one to me. I've had offers for advertising that I've deleted quickly, but never for an entire blog.

I looked at your set-up and topics and pictures. Yes, indeed, it has great value on so many levels. Well, now you can always go and start bid wars.

I find this kind of weird when your blog address is your name. If I had a URL which was something I understand someone would want to use or a company name then I may consider changing to a new URL. But who knows what they'd put on the site with your name and content on it - sounds a bit creepy!

I might consider it. For, like, a million dollars.

I haven't received one of these emails, but if I do I'm sure I'll get a good laugh over it.

That's a new one on me! I enjoy being "Rachel from VirtuoSew Adventures" and I'm dashed if I'd be willing to sell it!

I have never heard of such a strange thing before!

I had exactly the same e-mail too but just deleted it! I tweeted about it and someone said that I should have gone back with £1million!!!! I couldn't ever sell my blog! x

Oh wow, impressive, good for you.
I would sell mine and start over, well you know maybe I wouldn't if I couldn't have my name.

That kind of offer does raise interesting questions, doesn't it?

I just saw the email in my spam and thought it odd - in fact I couldn't quite understand if they were going to pay me to keep blogging because what is a blog worth if it is not updated or if they were going to update it or just let it linger - just seemed so strange

I've never heard the like, Rachel! If you sold it, would you still be posting on it? Would they have the right to change and edit it?? I don't even know how it would work, and how can this be cost effecient for them, what is the purpose?

Interesting. I keep hoping I'll just get an offer to advertise on my blog but I don't think I post often enough at this point. I'd definitely sell mine if it ever got to that point but at what price I'm not sure. Then I'd just start another one, because I don't think I could do without! I hope if you're interested, the offer wasn't a fluke. I'm always very wary that someone is trying to hack or something. I got one very weird request to answer questions on a panel for a movie. I deleted it because it just gave me a weird feeling and I didn't feel right about it. Go with your gut. Good luck to you!

That's a new one on me. Sounds like your blog is very popular, though--what a nice compliment! P.S. Did you advertise my review of your book on your blog? Don't be shy!

That is really weird. I wonder if the person was serious or just trying to give bloggers a hard time. If you did sell, were they going to just continue it and pretend to be you? My blog, like yours, is priceless to me. I've worked hard on it and made such great connections to people through. How do you put a price on that???

What in the world! I've never heard of such a thing. I wouldn't begin to sell mine. I love control:)

Rachel, I've *never* heard of such a thing! I love that you proclaimed your attachment to your blog- it's so true! We pour so very much time into our spaces that it's just that" OURS. Fun, interesting post, friend! :)

bizarre! what do they do with it once they own it? so happy you would never sell your's!

smilla4blogs said...

If you sold your blog would/could you still post and would the buyer expect you to do so? An odd notion, but one I probably won't have to consider!

I agree with you. There isn't a price tag anyone could give me that would make that trade seem remotely fair. I love blogging way too much!
