A Summer Stroll in Riga

Riga, Latvia

It's taken me a very long time to sort through all my photos from last summer's Baltic odyssey, not least because we took thousands of pictures. But I'm starting to get to grips with it, now, and wanted to start by sharing some shots from the beautiful streets of Riga.

Riga, the capital of Latvia, doesn't quite have the chocolate-box charm of its much-fĂȘted neighbour Tallinn - but it's still a gorgeous medieval city with plenty of picturesque streets, broad plazas, and quiet corners to explore. Here are just a few scenes to whet your appetite...

Riga does look lovely!
Is that a painted drain or is covered in knitting in that last photo?

The buildings are all so interesting to look at. It also seems really clean and bright. Gotta love that painted drain. All the ornate architecture is distilled into the pure ornament of that one pipe.

Unless I'm wrong, Latvia used to be part of the Soviet empire. The city has a very peculiar character, which your excellent photos more than highlight. I quite liked the contrast between blue and overcast skies. It brings some drama to the images.

Greetings from London.

i, too, noticed the colorful, alternative-art drainpipe...stands out like a bit of graffiti in a world of medieval architecture...love it!...shows attitude!

I never thought I'd say, "I really want to travel to Latvia." After seeing your pictures, it's tops on my list. Love that architecture!

it really does look as if someone has knitted a scarf to keep the drain pipe cosy in the winter, doesn't it? how wonderful.

do you think people come to England and admire our architecture in the same way as we adore looking at theirs? x

What a cute town! I would love to go. Also what is the pipe decorated with in the last picture? Paint or yarn? Either way, how incredibly adorable!
