There's something irresistibly picturesque about tree-lined waterways, don't you think?
I'm not a fan of the busy, marjuana-scented shopping streets of Amsterdam - but the residential areas along the canal are simply beautiful. Though I'm not sure I'd want to live on one of these houseboats, with tourists wandering by at all times of day and night - drunks climbing on the roof was a bad enough problem in the quiet corner of Oxford where I used to live, and it really does (quite literally) rock the boat when someone decides to walk across your bedroom ceiling.
What do you think - could you be tempted by a Dutch barge?

I can't imagine myself living on a boat. But putting that imagination aside, your pics look great. I'd love to shoot this kind of busy 'street'
Hi there Rachel! So fun to be back on blogger and see you. I was in Amsterdam in 1976 and even then thought it would be fun to live on a houseboat. Can't say the same now, however if I were 20 again?
I think I could be tempted by the larger, house shaped houseboat on the second to last photo. I know the boat shaped ones are more romantic, but practicality and a large book and crafts collection would require something more standard! The drunks I can live without.
We only spent a few hours in Amsterdam proper once as we were delayed 24 hours there by missing a connecting flight East owing to snow slowing things down in the UK, but we too went on the canal cruise etc. Sir had shoved in a 50 or 100 Euro note 'in case we needed anything in transit' and so we enjoyed ourselves on it!
Wonder if and when we'll get to travel again....?
I just gave you an award, dear Rachel! Why? Come on over & read all about it!! xxx Congrats! http://sophiesfoodiefiles.wordpress.com/2012/10/04/vegan-breakfast-smoothy-some-awards/
Maybe. :)
I suspect the very broad ones wouldn't rock for a single person on the roof, but it would be very disturbing to wonder when someone was going to try!
I'm not sure I could ever live on a boat, though I do love Amsterdam and your photos here. But since I can't swim, I think I'd spend my life terrified of drowning in a shallow canal.
